What is Ouija's Wishes?
Ouija's Wishes is a TNR (trap-neuter-return) program started by Fur Angels Rescue Shelter August 2022.
Who is Ouija? Ouija was a very special cat to our founder, who she sadly lost way too soon.
Ouija originally came to her at four months old in 2018, near death, and not even a pound. Every vet said to put him down, but she seen fight in him and gave him every chance possible to live. Boy did he prove all the vets wrong!
Ouija would travel everywhere with her and was harness trained. He absolutely loved to travel places!
But unfortunately, his time with her wasn't easy. He was chronically ill, he was unable to hold his own body heat, and had chronic sinus infections.
On January 8th, 2021, he was diagnosed with stage 1 kidney failure, and it progressed fast. By the end of the year, he was at stage 4.
On January 28th, 2022, we had to say the hardest goodbye
Ever since we lost him, we've always said if his mom was fixed, he never would have had to of gone through everything he did.
Our TNR program is to honor him and try and prevent any other cat to go through the same fate as him.
♡ RIP Ouija April 25th, 2018 - January 28th, 2022 ♡
What is Trap-Neuter-Release
TNR is in high demand, and we have limited resources; please be patient with our TNR Volunteers. We currently have a waitlist for TNR assistance.
Trap-Neuter--Return (TNR) is the non-lethal alternative to the humane approach to addressing community cat populations.
TNR is the most effective and humane way to control cat populations. Homeless, free-roaming (community) cats are trapped, brought to a veterinarian to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, eartipped (the universal sign that a community cat has been neutered and vaccinated), and then returned to their outdoor home.
Benefits of Trap-Neuter- Release
• TNR reduces shelter intake, as fewer homeless kittens are born
• Fewer cats. Over time TNR reduces the size of cat colonies anywhere from 16% to 66%. Additionally, if you remove friendly kittens from a feral colony and put them up for adoption, the reduction in the number of cats will be immediate.
• Less smell. Neutered male cats will mark their territory less, thus cutting down on the smell in the community.
• Less noise. Neutered cats make less noise and fight less.
• Rodent control. Although there is not a lot of research on this topic, some neighbors of feral cat colonies report a decrease in rodent populations.
Ear Tipping
Why is part of the cats ear missing?
Eartipping is a universal method that a cat has either been spayed or neutered. Some feral cats that are difficult to get close to, and therefore the identification must be visible for trappers or caregivers that the cat has been fixed.
The procedure to remove a one-quarter of a cats ear is done when the cat is already anesthetized for their spay or neuter surgery. It is relatively painless for the cat and has little to no bleeding.
Is there a fee for TNR help?
No, but we are still a small nonprofit so any donation for our time is greatly appreciated and will go towards future TNR projects.
The whole point of Ouija's Wishes is to never see a feral cat living unfixed.
We do not receive any local, county, state, or federal funding to help cover the expensive of doing TNR in our community.
How can you help?
Be a friend to community cats. They didn't ask to live like this.
Donations help offset the cost of spaying/neutering, FVRCP vaccine, rabies vaccine and a flea treatment given to each cat (around $50 each not including extra medical needed); purchasing traps; transfer cages; carriers and trapping supplies; and feeding and caring for the cats in recovery before being returned to their caregiver and colony.
If we get extra food donations we like to try and help out caregivers and their colonies.
The picture is George he is a example of one of the colony cats who needed extra medical care before he could be re-released.
How to request help?
Our resources only allow us to provide TNR help in the Toledo, Ohio area. To request TNR help, please fill out our TNR Request Application below
Please note we have a wait-list of colonies needing help. We are currently a smaller group, please be patient with our volunteers.
WE CURRENTLY HAVE A WAIT-LIST FOR HELP!
GETTING TNR APPOINTMENTS AT THIS TIME IS VERY DIFFICULT
